Well the place is very modern and a great upgrade from the past. We headed straight to the aquarium and right away it was a hit for our baby. The exhibits were well laid out and a great variety of species of animals. We spent most of our time here and a little on the other parts of the museum. The museum has a great cafe and the food is very fresh. They are definitely thinking GREEN when it comes to their food choices here. Overall I recommend this place for a toddlers and older infants. Teenagers may get bored after a while. Worth visiting at least once a year. So this is what I learned the last time I was at the Academy of Sciences There used to be grizzly bears in California. However they were hunted to extinction in the early 1900s and the last one to survive named Monarch lived in Golden Gate Park for awhile. In fact the bear on the California flag is a grizzly bear. Is it ironic that we honor an animal on our state flag that we hunted to extinction There are so many things I love about the California Academy of Sciences. It's green love that living roof it seeks to educate it's a research facility and doggone it it's just a whole barrel o' fun. Hands down one of my favorite places to visit in the city I love the aquarium. One of the first things you encounter as you walk into the academy is the pool with various skates rays and sharks swimming about. I find it very calming to watch them as they glide so smoothly along the sandy bottom. It's not quite the Monterey Bay Aquarium but it has a wide assortment of exhibits and so many species of fish. The sea dragons are so cool. The tunnel underneath the marsh habitat is awesome. Although I wish they had otters here I understand that most animals should not be kept in enclosed spaces. The biosphere is a lot of fun. The second you walk through the doors that separate it from the outside you feel like you're in a tropical forest. The only thing that's missing is the mai tai maybe that's something you can get during the nightlife events . Their special exhibit on reptiles and lizards was fantastic. The geckos monitors pythons and snakes were very interesting although being cold-blooded tend to be somewhat comatose when you see them. Realistically though this place should probably be called the academy of life sciences. Although the planetarium gives you some lessons on astronomy it doesn't have all the stuff you might find at a place like the natural science wing of the Smithsonian. While the Academy of Sciences does a lot of things well I wouldn't say that it's top-notch in any single area. The cafeteria seems to offer a lot of interesting entrees although dang it looked pretty expensive. Bring a family of four here and I could envision easily spending $60-70 for lunch. They must need the revenue for that Le Creuset cookware they use. Although I think their food is touted as sustainable I'm surprised they don't play up something like a garden on their living roof or something. There's also a restaurant downstairs called the Moss Room. I have yet to try it but how cool is it to dine in a place like this My other confession is that I've only paid once for admission here. The other outstanding thing about the academy is that they offer free days for specific zip codes throughout the year so you just have to pay attention to when those are. It can definitely get crowded but if you wait to go later in the afternoon it's not too bad. Around Christmas time they brought a couple of reindeer to graze on the roof. Outstanding. The new one is different not necessarily an improvement but with global warming and recycling in mind it's definitely a great example of modern green architecture - a work of art. The atmosphere is very open and there are skylights and huge glass windows everywhere to minimize the amount of lights needed. My favorite part is the rain forest dome which is essentially a rainforest inside of a glass dome with birds and butterflies and insects flying around you. San Jose CA 6/15/2011 I have been to this place 5th times already. This place is amazing and overwhelming with all things that kids or adults should see and learn. I have two boys and they loved coming here every year. The planetarium were amazing felt like ur really into the ride of going out into the space. The philippines rain forest which by the way super warm inside don't wear warm clothes that would make you feel exhausted but definitely exciting to navigate inside it. I like their butterflies flying freely and the fishes swimming on top of you and all the living things underwater were spectacular. You don't even have to go to a real zoo aquarium coz it's all right there. The living roof were so cool seeing plants come to life just by using compose material without being connected to solid soil ground. Their food cafe were superb although it's a little bit pricey. Every year they always have something new no wonder my boys love going there it's their new place to hang out whenever either on their spring break or summer break. If you have children this is a place for them to go explore and enjoy while learning. San Francisco CA 5/1/2011 This place is beautiful. it's in a gorgeous part of Golden Gate Park and right across from the De young museum which is great for a day of exploring and learning. I didn't care for the price of admission but if you go on a Thursday and are above 21 it's a fun and unique experience for the adults in and around the area. They have a live DJ and make it a social hangout without all of the little ones running around and screaming in your ears about butterflies and dinosaurs. Once you've seen it a couple times you don't have to go back. unfortunately. i think they need to reinvent the wheel a bit and change their exhibits to keep viewers intrigued and coming back. That being said... make sure to check out the rooftop once you finish all the exhibits. If you want to know more about the solar system there is the planetarium. Now if you or someone enjoy studying aquatic life the aquarium is the site to visit.
