Hotfixes are created quickly to resolve a specific issue and do not receive the same level of testing as security updates and other updates distributed via automatic updates. You have the option to download individual hotfixes if you are experiencing the specific problem that they correct but they are not pushed out via automatic updates. After they have been more thouroughly tested they are incorporated into a service pack. So intalling the service pack ensures that you have all the latest fixes and that you won #8217 t experience any of the corrected problems in the future. I don #8217 t think alot of people realize this. I see article after article that says SP1 only includes updates that have already been provided via automatic update. But this SP has over 700 hotfixes that had not been released previously via automatic update. They have all been combined and tested and should work well together. So installing the SP should result in a better experience. After read all posts here since the launch of the service pack 1 I decided to make this update on my Tohiba Satellite L650 notebook with Portuguese Windows 7 64bit installed and all other stuff. But first I made a chkdsk to the hard drive a scan with the anti-virus Microsoft Security Essentials defragmentation and a complete backup and image drive with the included tools on Windows 7 – just in case… Update started through Windows Update with anti-virus enabled here and there download progress bar paused but with intensive hardisk activity checking configurations and packages I think two or three reboots and about 45 minutes later Windows restarted all updated without any error and perfectly stable. Later I´ve noticed that boot and shutdown is the same but at work it’s noticeable faster on all operations #8211 I didn’t expected that… Also every previous restore points didn’t disappeared. Streaming audio was from several different web sites using different players video play back was also from various tv sites and youtube all stalled at 70 ish seconds. Uninstalled SP1 and all is well again. April 24 2011 1 00 am Thomas Well I have to say that SP1 on Win7 x64 solved my intermittent crashes. The crashes are no longer intermittent. Now the system hangs every time during logon. Eventually the screen goes black. Consistency only counts if you #8217 re not a screw up. Win 7 is now consistently screwed up. April 25 2011 7 36 am Tomo I installed SP1 and I had to restore my computer. It wouldn #8217 t do anything. I #8217 m luckey I was able to restore it it had gotten so bad from the crap SP1. It was taking 10 minutes to log on when usually it would only take 2 seconds. Take my advice and don #8217 t install SP1 for a few more months until microsoft has perfected it. I thought it was never going to end but suddenly it did. And then left me without any network connection telling me that the settings on the pc did not agree with the router. I even ordered the SP1 on DVD because I couldn #8217 t successfully get it right on Windows Update. I #8217 ve email MS support numerous times sending them my screenshots of my Windows Update Log SFC /SCANNOW which was fine told them my cskdsk was fine I have plenty of disk space 256 GB free of 283 GB I #8217 m up to date on all my drivers. I renamed Software Distribution folder to SoftwareDistributionOld.I also sent them my Windows Update log System Info. I get this error message when the DVD is about half through downloading. I also did a clean boot nothing has worked. I download the fixit tool and that didn #8217 t work. I downloaded the system readiness tool and that didn #8217 t work. I don #8217 t have any malware or viruses. When I try to download this I make sure my AV is disabled Windows Firewall is off and Windows Defender is off. MS forums I #8217 ve been reading MS support says #8216 did you have Norton or Mcafee on the system even if you didn #8217 t use it #8217 or something similar. Service Packs are cumulative so if you don #8217 t have SP1 installed SP2 will cover the same fixes. However it seems likely you would have the same issue s . Are you upto date on other windows update fixes If not try running those you might find that one of them in particular is giving you the same problem. 2nd. everything I was able to see regarding your error points to security anit-virus/spam software. Do you have Spybot Search and Destroy If so the tea timer needs to be disabled. Also I saw some users with Avast had an issue with TrustedInstaller.exe being removed by Avast. Check in C \Windows\Servicing Look for TrustedInstaller.exe If it is missing you might check avast quarantine to see if you can restore it. Check processes in task manager make sure Show processes from all users is clicked and kill any non-windows apps. May 2 2011 9 57 am angie I installed service pack 1 and when the computer restarted itself i have a black screen wth the cursor flashing in the top left hand corner no messages or any idea what has gone wrong. The disk is free but the charge $6 for S amp H. Better and cheaper than waiting for 13 hours with a questionable download. Daughter in law and son also need the SP1. The disk will be thebetter solution. My typical downlaod rate is 200Kb/sec. 46K has to be server overload at MS. Whenever I click on a video in YouTube it just shows a black box for the video. It loads all of the other videos on the right hand side pane but leaves the video box black. Anyways I have to switch where the audio gets sent from internal speakers to the HDMI cable. Since this update improves HDMI audio performance I am wondering if it sets your default playback device to HDMI output. Try clicking control panel searching #8220 sound #8221 and seeing what your default is and if disabling HDMI helps. Hope you find a way to fix it. June 28 2011 7 14 am Quaylus Was running a few programs and playing around on the internet. The notification box pops up and says updates are ready for my computer. So I click install and open up the progress window. That #8217 s when I learned I was getting SP1. Didn #8217 t close any of the programs or anything. Everything went off without a hitch. Download time was a bit lengthy but that was to be expected with everyone downloading it. The computer shut down and restarted a few times during the update but did what it was supposed to. When it restarted the last time my background and everything popped up just like it supposed to be and everything is now running fine. If you are still running I.E. version 5.50.4134.0100 then installing IE6 SP1 is very much a critical update as the version of IE you are running has not been supported for at least the last three years there having since been IE5.5 SP1 and then SP2 which is still supported and IE6 and then in Feb 2003 IE6 SP1 v6.0.2800.1106 . What error are you seeing when you attempt the install. Note that what you are downloading from the Windows Update site is just a stub installer. When this is run it then pulls down the required components which can amount to as much as 25MB. I expect the problem has arisen because I had to do a complete Windows ME re-install from a boot disk in order to fix a midi problem. The reinstall gave rise to some other problems. One I have fixed - relating to my inability to get a logon box after the reinstall. The other seems to be with windows updating or at least with me Internet Explorer. I have always had Windows Update working in the past and presume that my IE was up to date. Perhaps that contributes to the problem now. I see no way to completely uninstall and reinstall IE e.g. it is not listed in the Add/Remove Programs box in Control Panel. The problem occurs as follows I run Windows Update. The only suggested update of consequence is the critical update of Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 Windows '98 Windows ME . I close all running applications using Control Alt Delete repeatedly except for Systray IE and the update app. I select it. The original 458K stub downloads. I accept the agreement and choose Typical Install. A 10 729KB file downloads seemingly completely. Installation begins. Installation jumps extremely quickly from 1% to 70%. The error occurs at this point. The box doesn't say error as such but says #034 Setup was unable to install all the components. Please close all applications and try running Setup again. #034 But as mentioned I have already closed all applications I know of having originally received this error when I had apps such as my firewall and anti-virus programs running. Anyway I reboot close all apps again and try running set-up again. The same failure occurs in the exact same way. I then cancel setup. No idea how to fix this. My IE remains at version 5.50.4134.0100. Go to folder C Program Files/Internet Explorer/Uninstall Information. Now Edit - Select All - Cut all files. Open #034 Old uninstall #034 folder and paste the files. You will now be able to install all the troublesome components. If everything works as expected you can delete the #034 Old Uninstall #034 folder and the files you moved. I did what you said and then ran Windows Update. The download added some components. The install started again. It got by the 1% point and kept going. That relieved me. Once it got to 5% it jumped to 70% very quickly which worried me. But it seemed to keep going and got to 100%. The install seemed to continue from there but eventually did freeze without ever telling me that it was successful unlike what Windows Update usually seems to do. I closed IE and rebooted anyway. The configuration seemed to change and the IE version was updated. I found it necessary to keep going back to Windows Update and keep rebooting in order to get a bunch of additional consequent critical updates serially. These all worked fine until the last one. Unfortunately at the very end of this process a critical cumulative SP1 update for Outlook Express 6 being KB837009 would say install was successful but everytime I go back to Windows Update it says I need to install that one again . I use Outlook instead of Outlook Express anyway but will note for the record that my Outlook Express 6 version is 6.0.2800.1106 I don't know if that is the latest or not . I am also not sure whether it matters that I can't get this critical update confirmed as being installed since I use Outlook anyway. The Windows Update install history says #034 successful install #034 but every time I start Windows Update it tells me that I need this update again . Like I said I seem to be 95% there. Don't know if you or others have any ideas for this last problem. I couldn't figure out which file to attempt a fix analgous to the one you gave me concerning the original situation. The size of the Win Me files is around 13.2 MB which whilst still a fair download on dial-up is significantly less than 77MB. Download the file iesetup.exe 481 KB from the Microsoft Download Centre http // microsoft /downloads/details.aspx FamilyID=1e1550cb-5e5d-48f5-b02b-20b602228de6 DisplayLang=en and place in a folder on your desktop. Connect to the internet. Open the folder containing iesetup.exe and double click to open. Accept the agreement and click Next. On the next page select Install Minimal or customize your browser and then click Next. On the next page click the Advanced button and check #034 Download only #034 and click OK. Now click Next and on the next page ensure that just Windows Millennium is checked. Click Next again and the download should start which is around 12.7MB. When complete you should then be able to install IE6 SP1 without having to go on line by running iesetup.exe. Swing Migration SBS 2003 SP1 Pre-Installation Issues If you have used the Swing Migration method to move your server installation please read this document first SBS 2003 SP1 Pre-Installation Issues Important for Swing Migration Servers . Things you must do on the server and know before you install Small Business Server 2003 Service Pack 1 Ensure that services such as SQLadmin Monitoring and the SQL instances for Sharepoint and Monitoring are logging in under local system. The application of SBS SP1 will need rights to these MSDE instances and the install will not run if 'log in under' is not set as local system. Setup causes some uninterruptible power supply UPS devices to switch to battery mode during hardware detection. If a UPS device switches to battery mode during hardware detection Setup may fail. If you have previously installed Sharepoint services as a part of Small Business Server 2003 you will notice that there is a MSDE instance called 'Sharepoint'. If you have decided that you needed to move the data inside this instance to an instance called 'MyCompany' and after this you have deleted the Sharepoint instance the SP1 installer will report an error but at the end of the installation sequence it will report that the install was successfull. However the installation will not have completed succesfully. No MSDE instance will be upgraded to Service Pack 4 and other unexpected things can occur. The solution or workaround Before you install SBS SP1 uninstall the Intranet from the SBS setup and reinstall it. This will create a default Sharepoint instance and set the Companyweb to the Sharepoint instance. Be sure to backup your old SQL instance before doing this. If you are running Trend a/v or any other antivirus ensure you have disabled the antivirus before installing this service pack. Go into services and right click on properties and flip to #8216 disable #8217 and reboot the server to ensure antivirus is not in memory. Make sure you are logged in as the build in Administrator before you try to install SBS SP1. Even an user with full admin rights won't be able to install this servicepack. About 10 minutes into the install after extracting the pack etcetera you will get the message that only the build in admin can do this and you will have to start all over again. If you did not install Outlook 2003 in the Clientapps when you initially installed the server you must do that before you install the service packs. If you install SBS SP1 without Outlook in the Clientapps you will get an error message at the end of the SBS SP1 install. After that you will see the message that the update was successfully applied. After reboot review the logfiles in the \Program Files\Microsoft Integration\Windows for Small Business Server 2003\Logs. They will show you that the error was with Outlook 2003. You need at least two Gb free space on the boot drive. Click on Start Server Management Users click on Administrator and review the #8220 members of #8221 tab. By default the administrator account should only have memberships in the following groups Administrators Domain Admins Domain Users Enterprise Admins Group Policy Creator Owners Mobile Users Schema Adminis And possibly Internet users if ISA 2000 is installed You should NOT have membership in Power Users. Things that can happen during the installation of Small Business Server Service Pack 1 If you get an error during the installation of Windows Small Business Server 2003 Update KB891193 for Windows XP Service Pack 2 that the system cannot find the path you must have moved the Clientapps folder to another location but you did not change the path in the registry. Take a look at this hive in the registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SmallBusinessServer\clientsetup "ClientAppsRoot"="C \ClientApps" If you moved the Clientapps to drive D the ClientAppsRoot must point to the same place. Ensure that this server has not had an Exchange Information Store transferred to it from a previous server. If you performed such a transfer as in swing migrations or other disaster recoveries please wait on installing SBS 2003 SP1 until you review the deployment issues at sbsmigration page which will be released shortly. Review and make sure that the Server Management link is in the startup folder after applying SBS SP1 and the reboot. IF IT IS NOT this may be an indication that the installation was not successful. Please review the install log files for error messages. If you renamed any .msi #8217 s you may also experience issues. It is important to remember any customizations you may have done and evaluate if they might be upgraded during this service pack installation. If they will be part of the upgrade and you have made substantial modifications the install may indicate an error. Review the log files as appropriate. An example of what can happen is this You installed Group Policy Management with Service Pack 1 and you renamed the installer to gpmc1.02.msi. When applying SBS SP1 you get an error. More information If you look into C \Program Files\Microsoft Integration\Windows Small Business Server 2003\Logs\SBSMSI-GPMC.LOG you will notice an error like this "MSI s 14 38 21 10 11 140 Product Microsoft Group Policy Management Console with SP1 Error 1316. A network error occurred while attempting to read from the file e \129a93311345b099711ded\cd3\sbs\GPMC\gpmc1.02.msi" What happens is that MSI installer remembers the last name it installed from and it is looking for the same name for the update which does not exist and that causes the error. Please uninstall the GPMC from add/remove programs. After you have extracted SBS 2003 SP1 you install Group Policy Management from the directory called CD3 and then run SP1 for SBS 2003. If the install fails during the last patch disk 2 patch 5 also known as KB885918 or the Small Business Server sp1 we would recommend that you call Microsoft customer support http // microsoft /services/microsoftservices/supp.mspx#small and be prepared to send the following files in for review In the folder under Program Files\Microsoft Integration\Windows Small Business Server\ you will find the files Eventlog.txt Errorlog.txt and Setup.log. Cannot install SBS 2003 SP1 You received the following error message when trying to install SBS 2003 SP1 it may occur in different setup stages "Extracting file failed. It is most likely caused low memory low disk space for swapping file or corrupted cab file." If you click OK you may receive the following error "Windows Small Business Server Service Pack 1 Setup has encountered an error. For more information review the most recent entry in the Setup error log in C \Program Files\Microsoft Integration Windows Small Business Server 2003 logs\setup.log." This is caused by possible corrupted installation files. The fix to delete the setup files in the %temp% folder. SP1 installation fails claiming the account is not an administrative account.
