This loss is a major blow to the population of imperial eagles in Doñana which after years of significant declines and on the brink of extinction had entered a recovery phase reaching the 9-pairs for which the couple Veta de Ali was essential as it was among the highest reproductive successes of the Doñana region with 10 chicks raised in the past five years. The ecological associations consider this poisoning which clearly was directed only to remove the pair of imperial eagles in Veta de Ali as both an eco-catastrophe since it means losing a few of the 250 pairs that exist of imperial eagle in the world and its genetic basis as economically and socially because you cannot forget that human and economic efforts are being devoted by the government to ensure the survival of the species endemic to the Iberian Peninsula. Ecologists in Action WWF-Spain SEO / BirdLife and Andalucia Bird Society consider it as unacceptable the ease with which it was possible to access the area and put down poisoned bait requiring the Ministry of Environment to institute greater efforts in preventive measures for the eradication of venom in Doñana and increased surveillance both inside and outside of protected natural areas. Environmental organizations are also called upon to cooperate with investigations and submit any information that may help to identify the person/s or organisations for this poisoning. * First publicly announced by Andalucia Bird Society on the 14/07/09 I am just back from some holidays away from Spain and have just known about the Spanish Imperial Eagles killed. It is a real shame that is a spot that I used to visit several times every spring during my tours in the Doñana area it was great to be able to enjoy such a beautiful animal there. The official reports says that the eagles were found on Saturday the 4th but I was actually there on Wednesday the 1st with some clients trying to spot the eagles from the usual place about 1 km away from the nest and we did not see any of them around. I would think that farmers may have to do something with it. Since the eagles have been nesting there some restrictions to their activities were implemented and some have been fined because of light aircrafts they use for spraying the crops passing too close to the nest. Besides the landowners wanted apparently to rent the land for agricultural purposes but the application was declined by the environmental administration. So I guess that the eagles there were nothing but a nuisance for them. It seems that farmers haven't been able to deal properly with the pressure put on them by the environmental administration or seen the other way around the administration haven't deal properly with the fact of having such as different interests in such a small area. I can also say that this year I haven't seen around the spot as much control as I used to see in the previous years when someone from the Environmental Agency was permanently there every day from sunrise to sunset during the whole breeding period. As usually on these cases I don't think there is only one person to blame for it. The National Park of Donana is situated in the south-eastern corner of the province of Huelva and consists of 50 720 hectares of protected land in which there are vast wetlands and forests of stone pines and cork-oaks. For hundreds of years it was the royal hunting grounds where kings queens and other notable dignitaries would come to enjoy their sport. Then in the early 1960's a part of the land was purchased to aid the conservation of the area and in 1969 it was declared as a national park. More land was added over the years until it became what it is today. In 1981 certain areas of Donana park were turned into Biospheric Reserves and in 1988 it was given the status of a Special Protection Area for birds. Finally the park was declared as a World Heritage Site in 1994. Various ecosystems exist within Donana Park which include the sand-dunes and lagoons the forests and surrounding scrubland and perhaps most importantly the marsh areas which are considered by many to be among the finest and most ornithologically important in Europe. Donana park is now managed by the Ministry of the Environment of the Spanish Government and entry into the park is restricted to conducted tours either by boat from Sanlucar de Barrameda or by safari bus from the El Acebuche Visitors Centre operated by licensed companies. The Safari bus tours which are the most popular are of four hours duration and cover some 80 kilometres of trails along the Atlantic sand-dunes and inside Donana Park proper. Unfortunately as good as these tours are they are not an ideal way to watch birds as the drivers are on a schedule and cannot stop just because you may have caught a fleeting glimpse of a rare bird that you would like to investigate further. The constant motion of the vehicle over fairly rough terrain makes the use of binoculars and therefore birdwatching almost impossible. Donana Park is further protected by a buffer zone of some 84 200 hectares of surrounding natural parkland and by the Atlantic Ocean to the south where 35 kilometres of deserted sandy coastline forms the boundary. This buffer zone The Parque Natural de Doñana also benefits from protected status but not to the same strict degree as the national park. Entry into these areas is largely restricted but there are various visitors centres with nature trails where the general public are welcomed. Most of the bird species and the other wildlife that exists within Donana Park's boundaries can generally also be found at these sites. The importance of Coto Doñana Park as a conservation site cannot be over stressed. Millions of wintering birds mainly wildfowl and waders from the north flock to the area each year and many millions more use it as a feeding station during the migration periods. It is also of major importance as a breeding ground for some of the most endangered bird species in Europe. Over 250 different species are regularly seen here and rarities are very often recorded. The area's geographical position means that it is likely to attract any vagrant or accidental species that may wander or be blown into the region. There are five visitors centres within the Parque Natural three of which are very easily accessible and should form part of any birdwatcher's visit here. A fourth centre The Ice Factory can be found at Sanlucar de Barrameda on the east bank of the Rio Guadalquivir in the province of Cadiz. The fifth centre the Jose Antonio Valverde Centre is many kilometres out into the Marismas del Guadalquivir and access is extremely difficult. It is however of great interest as it is a major nesting site for colonies of Glossy Ibises Black-crowned Night Herons and Squacco Herons. Directions to the last site can be obtained from the other Donana Park visitors centres but the directions are not as clear as they could be and most local maps of this area are wildly inaccurate. Apart from the areas above and the excellent marsh areas and the Spanish Ornithological Societies bird observatory at El Rocio the average visiting birder will leave without having set foot in some of the best birding areas that Donana Park has to offer. These sites are mainly in the northern marsh areas of both Huelva and Sevilla provinces and although access is not easy the quality and quantity of the birds that can be found there will make the time and effort spent getting there well worth while. This is the area that I refer to as "the hidden Donana Park" where sites such as Dehesa De Abajo which has the largest breeding colony of White Storks in Europe can be found. This area is also a regular breeding site for Crested Coots Black Kites Hoopoes Bee-eaters and Purple Swamp-hens. Close to the Dehesa de Abajo there are many other sites such as Entremuros Isla Cristina Brazo de la Torre Isla Mayor Casa de Bombas Caño de Guadiamar Caño de Rosaliman Veta de la Palma Lucio del Lobo and Lucio del Cangrejo. All of these are major wetland areas where many attractive bird species can be found either as breeding species residents winter visitors or passage migrants. These regularly include Marbled ducks Great White Egrets Purple Herons Little Bitterns Red Kites Black-shouldered Kites Marsh Hen and Montagu's Harriers Booted Short-toed and Spanish Imperial Eagles Collared Pratincoles Whiskered Black and Gull-billed Terns Great Spotted Cuckoos Crested Short-toed and Lesser Short-toed Larks Stone Curlews Pin-tailed Sandgrouse Black-eared Wheatears Greater Flamingos Crested Coots Spoonbills and many species of geese ducks and waders. Large areas of this region are agricultural mainly rice production and the almost permanently flooded fields offer many opportunities to stop and watch numerous bird species at very close quarters. It is not unusual to see Little Cattle Great White and Squacco Herons White Storks Grey and Purple Herons Black-winged Stilts Black-tailed Godwits Lapwings and many smaller waders all feeding together in one field whilst eagles buzzards kites and other birds of prey pass by overhead. As many of these sites are very hard to find you may decide that you need the assistance of a Bird Guide who's local knowledge and experience can lead you quickly to the very heart of this birdwatching wonderland and show you the sites and birds of "the hidden Donana Park" that you may otherwise miss. It consists of a vast coastal marshland complex in the floodplain of the lower Guadalquivir River separated from the Atlantic Ocean by an extensive system of both active and stabilised dunes. The area is of international importance for breeding staging and wintering birds. It is a breeding site of the endangered duck Marmaronetta angustirostris and the rare gull Larus genei. The trees in one area of the vera grasslands support a large mixed nesting colony of Ardea cinerea Egretta garzetta Nycticorax nycticorax Ciconia ciconia and Platalea leucorodia . Nesting species also include Anas strepera Aythya ferina Netta rufina Porphyrio porphyrio 1 000-2 000 pairs Fulica cristata Himantopus himantopus Recurvirostra avosetta and Chlidonias hybridus . Wintering species include Anser anser 80 000 Anas penelope 120 000 A. acuta 20 000 A. crecca 170 000 A. clypeata 80 000 Fulica atra 40 000 and Limosa limosa 40 000 . Lynx pardina is the most notable mammal. Wetland Types The area contains fresh and brackish areas including permanent and seasonal marshes dunes and permanent and seasonal lakes. Biological/Ecological notes Currently the marshes cover 27 000 ha but they are the last remnant of wetlands which once occupied 200 000 ha of the lower Guadalquivir floodplain. The stabilised dunes or cotos form an undulating landscape with a vegetation cover varying with the height above the water table. The southern zone of the Cotos is covered by low Pinus pinea forest. The area between the Cotos and the marshland consists of grassland which is referred to as #8220 vera #8221 because it is always green and lush. The emergent vegetation is dominated by Scirpus lacustris in areas of deeper more permanent water and by S. maritimus in the seasonal marshes. The flora also includes halophytes from genera such as Arthrocnemum Suaeda and Salicornia and Tamarix scrub. Hydrological/Physical notes The marshes are fed mainly by autumn and winter rainfall and river flow and therefore show marked seasonal variations in their extent. There are salinity gradients increasing from north to south and from west to east while subtle variations in the relief of the generally flat plain lead to the occurrence of deeper areas of water Lucios and slight elevations Caños Vetas and Paciles . Human Uses The area is owned by the state and is primarily devoted to nature conservation. Land use activities that are compatible with conservation objectives are permitted within the site. These include charcoal production bee keeping gathering of Pinus wood fishing and extensive stock grazing. There is also touristic development. Adverse Factors In April 1998 there was an accidental spillage of millions of cubic metres of toxic mining waste upstream of the site which contaminated a large area with highly acidic material rich in heavy metals. The Coordination Commission mentioned above has provided the principal framework for the authorities concerned to address the clean up and restoration work. In recent years concern also has been expressed over the impact of mass tourism and intensive irrigated agriculture in the region outside the National Park. There have been fears that these activities are causing over-exploitation of regional aquifers leading to a fall in groundwater levels and a gradual reduction of the extent and duration of seasonal flooding in the marshes. Information adapted from UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Directory The biosphere reserve is located in the Gulf of Cadiz and represents one of the most important protected area in Spain. The core area is made up of the Doñana National Park . The importance of Doñana is based on the ecosystem variety it hosts and the high number of species that it represents. It comprises sand dunes and groups of shifting dunes ecosystems some of which move very rapidly. Vegetation cover has stabilized some dunes and there are lagoons and marshy areas in the dune slacks. Almost half of the reserve area comprises swamps on flat clay soil filled with muddy sediments marismas with features including canals with slight elevations #8216 vetas #8217 and #8216 paciles #8217 that have been carved by natural drainage closed hollows #8216 lucios #8217 which hold still water and #8216 ojos #8217 #8211 points where ground water reaches the surface. The marismas flood in winter create ideal conditions for large numbers of migrating birds. Doñana is a place of passage and wintering site for over 150 bird species and crucial for the wintering of many aquatic birds such as geese up to 60 000 and many as 300 000 ducks. Besides the waterfowl Doñana is home to other interesting migratory species such as the booted eagle Hieraaetus pennatus short-toed eagle Circaetus gallicus and black kite Milvus migrans . The palace of Doñana remains a testimony to an exalted past as the favorite hunting reserve of Spanish kings. Some 150 people 2001 live in the biosphere reserve mainly engaged in agriculture and tourism. More than 250 000 tourists visited the biosphere reserve in 1999. Almost half the reserve area comprises swamps on flat clay soil filled with muddy sediments marismas with features including canals with slight elevations #8220 vetas #8221 and #8220 paciles #8221 that have been carved by natural drainage closed hollows #8220 lucios #8221 which hold still water and #8220 ojos #8221 #8211 points at which ground water reaches the surface. The clay sediments of the marshes are rich in calcium and magnesium and the marismas form a diverse mosaic of microhabitats pools banks streams reedbeds and mudflats. The marismas flood in winter creating ideal conditions for large flocks of migrating birds. Mean annual temperature 17°C and mean annual precipitation 600mm. Rainfall is concentrated in winter with a peak of 110mm per month. Vegetation Plant communities on the dunes have Atlantic #8211 North African affinities and a notable degree of endemism. Rhamno-Juniperetum macrocarpas communities occur on the outer dunes with Rhamno-Juniperetum sophora on the dry inland established dunes. Cold sand Pseudoglei type vegetation includes Oleo-Quercetum suberis plantations of cork oak olive trees and capers Ficario-Fraxinetum angustifoliae and Viti-Salicetum atrocinerae. The heathland matorral vegetation varies with water availability. In the damp hollows Erica scoparia and E. ciliaris occur and on the drier ridges Rosmarinus officinalis Lavandula stoechas and scattered trees such as Pinus pinea introduced species cork oak Quercus suber and Arbutus unedo occidental Mediterranean communities . In the mobile dune system there are species such as marram grass Ammophila arenaria and camarina Corema album. The covering vegetation of the marsh depends on the conditions of the pools and the salt content of the soil. In the highest zones species of seablite and glasswort Suaeda sp. Salicornia sp. Arthrocnemum sp. are found. The depressed zones of seasonal inundation are covered by sea club rush Scirpus maritimus bulrush Schoenoplectus lacustris rushes Juncus sp. and brackish water crowfoot Ranunculus baudotii. Freshwater lake communities are similar to classes Phragmitea Littorelletea and Potametea of atlantic-european type. Brackish water swamp have communities similar to Spartinetea Artrocnemetea and Ruppietea of an arid north-african type. Some 750 species of plants have been identified including two species new to science and at least 45 new to Europe. Fauna Contains most of the Mediterranean fauna with a few elements from North Africa and Europe which came down the Atlantic coast. Vertebrates are especially important. Species include eight fish 10 amphibian 19 reptile and 30 mammal. Species of particular importance include Valencia hispanica Aphanius iberos Testudo graeca Latastes viper Vipera lastastie gaditana spiney footed lizard Acanthdactylus erythrurus Aquila adalberti Porphirio porphirio Aythya nyroca Oxyura leucocephala slender-billed gull Larus genei stone-curlew Burhinus oedicnemus squacco heron Ardeola ralloides. Imperial eagle Aquila heliaca adalberti short-toed eagle Circaetus gallicus booted eagle Hieraaetus pennatus buzzard Buteo buteo black Milvus migrans and red kites M. milvus the kestrel Falco tinnunculus and hobby Falco subbuteo predominantly in the stablilized sands. Amongst the mammals of this zone are wild boar Sus scrofa fallow deer Dama dama red deer Cervus elaphus lynx Felis lynx pardina small spotted genet Genetta genetta red fox Vulpes vulpes and common rabbit Oryctolagus cuniculus. The marsh lies on the west Europe to west Arica migration route and is indispensable as a winter habitat for several species of waterfowl such as the greylag goose Anser anser flocks of up to 40 000 teal Anas crecca and wigeon Anas penelope. It is also a spring nesting area for Mediterranean and African birds including spoonbill Platalea leucorodia and greater flamingo Phoenicopterus ruber. Important breeding wetland species include marbled teal Anas angustirostris ruddy shelduck Tadorna ferruginea and purple gallinule Porphyrio porphyrio. Flamingos have also nested on various occasions and have increased during the last few years. Carp Cyprinus carpio and eels Anguilla anguilla are common. Cultural Heritage Donana has a known history of over 700 years. It was the favourite hunting reserve of Spanish kings such as Philip IV Philip V and Alfonso XIII. It was owned by the Duchess of Alba and formed the backdrop of her portrait by Goya. The palace of Donana remains as a testimony to this exalted past. It is notable for the great diversity of its biotopes especially lagoons marshlands fixed and mobile dunes scrub woodland and maquis. It is home to five threatened bird species. It is one of the largest heronries in the Mediterranean region and is the wintering site for more than 500 000 water fowl each year. Climate The climate is Mediterranean moderated by the ocean with warm dry summers and cool wet winters. The mean annual temperature is 17 degrees Celsius °C July and August average 23.5° December and January average 9.3°. The mean annual precipitation is 525 millimeters mm concentrated in the winter peaking between 90-110 mm in December. The park as a whole comprises three distinct kinds of ecosystem the marshes the Mediterranean scrublands and the coastal mobile dunes with their beaches. Marsh The marsh is the most seasonal and changing ecosystem in Doñana. In summer it looks like an extensive shelf dry clayey and cracked whereas in winter the rainwater turns the landscape into an endless lake a winter shelter for innumerable anatidaes and other species.Its greatest splendour takes place in spring when a green carpet of irises and sedges covers it a brood area in this season for countless aquatic birds. The marsh ecosystem is characterized by the lack of relief.It is made up of the accumulation of sand and slime deposited by rivers and pipes and presents small slopes that control the duration of the flood decisive for the vegetation and fauna of this place. Dunes The system of mobile dunes of Doñana unique in Spain is one of the most beautiful landscapes of the park. The dunes extremely interesting both from an ecological and a cultural viewpoint are formed by accumulations of sand whose front of progress has a steeper slope than the part of displacement called tail.The progress of the dunes from the beach buries and destroys the vegetation that finds on its way forming between two dunes the “corrales” copses of stone pines and bushes. Beach One of the wider virgin coasts of Europe with about 35km between the town of Matalascañas and the mouth of the Guadalquivir river. The beaches of Doñana represent an intense dynamism and change their profile constantly due to the sea regressions through the centuries. Testimonies of this are the three watchtowers of the 16th century located along this coast which at present give shelter to peregrine falcons. Southwestern winds cause the continuous transport of sands over the beaches of the National Park moved afterwards to the inside forming the trains of mobile dunes. On the beach shelter of thousands of coastal birds the remains of marine species such as crustaceans and fish accumulate and often it is possible to find cetaceans and marine turtles. Forest The ecosystem of the forest and bushes of Doñana is made up of stabilised sands colonised by Mediterranean vegetation for the most part. Divided into two great associations due to the humidity and height of the land above the aquifer level they have been defined as wet shrub in the lowest and wetter places where heathers gorses ferns and lings prevail. Dry shrub characterized by rosemary rockrose furze and water mint is located in the highest parts of the terrain. Animals and mensharingNature Flora The park supports an incredible array of vegetation in a variety of virgin habitats. Inland are large expanses of stone pines as well as Mediterranean scrublands with narrow leaved cistus heather mastic tree rosemary cistus scrub glasswort red lavender rosemary and thyme. There are also junipers and forests of cork oaks known as quot laspajareras quot for the enormous quantity of birds that nest in them. Among the flowering plants are lavender tree heaths gladioli irises and rock roses. In the spring the marshlands are covered with flowers. Fauna This is a vast wilderness that supports an unrivalled wealth of fauna 125 species of birds are known to be resident here as well as 125 migratory bird species 17 reptiles nine amphibians and eight species of fish. There is a rich variety of mammals 28 species in total with some in danger of extinction such as the lynx and the Egyptian mongoose. Also here are badgers rabbits and otters. Game is also plentiful with red deer fallow deer and wild boar. Birds Doñana comprises delta waters which flood in winter and then drop in the spring leaving rich deposits of silt and raised sandbanks and islands. These conditions are perfect in winter for geese and ducks but most exciting in spring when they draw hundreds of flocks of breeding birds. Rivers As part of the Guadalquivir delta the park is riddled with creeks and streams the main ones being the Brazo de la Torre the Caño de Guadiamar and Caño Real. The park is dotted with ponds lucios that like the marshlands themselves can dry up almost completely in summer. History Settlers of Doñana. Historical texts confirm the presence in Doñana of Tartessos Phoenicians Romans and Arabs. Already in the 13th century there are chronicles that mention these lands as favorite place of hunt for the royalty. Doñana apos s name. The term quot Doñana quot does allusion to one of his more illustrious owners Dona Ana of Mendoza daughter of the princess of Éboli and married the duke VII of Medina Sidonia moved back to live to these lands in the 16th century. History Jose Antonio Valverde. Doñana owes his existence to this illustrious Spanish scientist who in the 60s managed to convince the authorities of the importance to preserve these lands.
